London – Gatwick Airport
See you inabit UK
London (30th April)
Crept out the front door, whispered goodbye to mum who was still in her PJ's, as we didn't want to wake the boys, and jumped in a taxi to Ipswich train station to catch the 6:44am to London. A foggy start to the day, much like our still hesitant thoughts on leaving Leo and Ben at home for two weeks, the first time we have been away from them for more than one night, as a couple. We knew they were in good hands though with Nana at the helm...a few days advanced training in the world of Purse-Jackson meant a safe handover of the parental reins.
This was the start of our belated honeymoon in SE Asia. The plan - A whistle stop overnighter in Bangkok followed by two flights via KL to Medan, Northern Sumatra in Indonesia where we would spend roughly a week in the orang utan jungles of Bukit Luwang, only several hundred kilometres north from a recently active volcano (the name escapes me) and the rest on a surf and dive island at the northernmost tip, Pulau Wei (which happens to be one of the first places that was hit by the tsunami, earlier this century...a fact that only came to light a couple weeks before departure). We would also spend one night in KL on the way back via Bangkok.
Anyway...this entry was about the start of our journey. From London Liverpool Street Station we decided to avoid the morning rush of suits and ties on the tube and opted for a swift but scenic walk to Farringdon station where we would catch our connecting train to Gatwick airport. North terminal presented us with duty free shops galore, but first stop was MoneyCorp to collect several wads of pre-booked Baht, Ringett and Rupiah. Felt sorry for the cashier who had to count it, a tired camp looking lad with a friendly sense of humour and quick hands. A pair of flip flops and sun glasses from Fatface, a few bits and bobs from Boots and Dixons and brunch at Cafe Rouge helped pass the time before boarding our Turkish Airways flight...next stop, Istanbul, Turkey to catch our connecting flight to Bangkok.
