13/3/18 - Day 45
My birthday! Started the day with a lovely yoga session taken by an American lady called Margaret, brilliant session. Then straight back to shower and change as we’d booked a driver to take us to Angkor Thom (Bayon) and then the final, jewel in the crown, Angkor Wat.
It feels like 45 degrees and I have a banging headache which I’ve had for a few days (I’ve tried water, booze, yoga, sleep and tablets, nothing works - blame it on the hormones!) need to push through it as it’s our last day here before we head off tomorrow...
So in order of sites visited today (c/o our wonderful tuktuk driver Paulie)
- visit to Angkor Thom, South Gate - the whole temple area is approx 3km x 3km it’s huge..
- then into Bayon
- next; Baphuon
- through the wall of Phimeanakas, walked to the elephant terrace and around the terrace of the Leper King
Had a pit stop for coconut juice, much needed as we were literally melting and then onto the West Gate to see Angkor Wat. AK is approx 2km x 2km and you walk across a huge (temporary) floating moat to get to it. Encountered a group of monks on the way in for a quick photo shoot. The temples are just mind blowing, the crowds of other tourists less so!
Back to our hotel to relax and catch up with messages from lovely friends and family before J takes me out for a ‘surprise’ slap up birthday supper. We ended up at Viroth’s, lovely food and he’d organised flowers and cake, very embarrassing but fantastic all the same, what a ⭐️... what a day, what a life!
