/ Chile and more
It seems that turning left when we got on the plane, does make a long flight more bearable. It also works wonders if you speak nicely with the attendants 😀 BA gave me a bottle of rosé champagne -which I thought was a nice touch to mark the start of our adventure and I’ll enjoy raising a glass to them all, tonight.
La Reve hotel is an oasis- from the heat and the city madness. I think I’ll be very comfortable here-I’ve already told M that I want a library similar to theirs- their courtyard isn’t too shabby too.
We started with a trip up the funicular to San Christobel Hill, the highest point in the city, it’s a great place to see the city from and there’s a 22 metre statue of the Virgin Mary at the top, keeping a eye on everyone. Being a Sunday, it was mad busy with families visiting the zoo and the church at the very top. On a clear day, apparently you can get really good views of the city and of the Andes that surround it, but we weren’t so lucky. The views were somewhat hazy: to the east of us on the other side of the valley are huge forest fires which have created quite a bit of smoke, so the mountains were not in view.
The city is huge and made up of 31 districts, we’ve walked round Huerfanos, Ahumada and Bellavista taking in sights such as the main square - Plaza de Armas, the parliamentary buildings, the Mint and loads of churches of different denominations.
Our hotel is in Providencia and is a centrally located for some great sight seeing and bar hopping. I have loved having the sculpture park at the bottom of our road, across the river.
It’s been great fun communicating with the locals-speaking a bit of Italian, French and Spanglish- it also turns out Moira’s 111 day streak on Duolingo was worth it (although we are still desperate for someone to ask us where the library is!) - today we ordered an ice cream each and ended up with a huge bowl to share- it would have been impolite to send it back - surely 😉
On first impressions, we have found the Chilean people to be lovely. What a great start to our adventure 🥰

Sadly the forest fires to the east have made the view hazy - otherwise you would have seen the Andes
