Sunday 12th March
We stayed overnight at a funky airport hotel in Puerto Princesa called Canvas Boutique Hotel, didn’t do much once we arrived at 4.30, didn’t feel like eating, just really wanted to sleep. We managed to stay awake until 9ish and then we were up at 5.15 to catch the shuttle to the airport for our first flight from PP to Manila.
Land into Manila at 9.30 and as we have a three hour layover we head into the lounge, finally some decent wifi! Nice to catch up with a few things after almost 12 days off line (although that’s been wonderful too). Our flight from Manila leaves on time around 1, we get into Kuala Lumpar around 5 and after a bit of fannying about at the Airport (queued for a taxi only to find that due to a rainstorm in KL centre there weren’t any cabs getting out to the Airport). We backtracked into the airport, made our way to the train station and caught the train into KL central. Jumped into a cab, which then took us to The Majestic in KL central… it’s beautiful, like something out of the 1930’s, also reminds me of The Shining. I’m just looking for the toddlers pedalling around the corridors 😀. We embark on early birthday celebrations by having cocktails and playing snooker with some of the locals in the hotel bar (The Smokehouse). It’s lovely and we manage to scrape in for Happy Hour which fortunately doesn’t finish until 8.
Monday 13th March
My birthday (plus lots of others; Mandy, Andrea, Claire, Barrie so HBTY to them all too). I wake around 8.30 after the best sleep of the whole trip so far. The room (and bed) are gorgeous. J surprises me with streamers on our bed and a very tasteful (!) Happy Birthday banner plus a wonderful pair of duck feet fins as a gift. After coffee in bed we head down for breakfast, which is delicious, the restaurant is huge and the choice of cuisines are enormous too! We then head out for a walk to KL central market and China town. Then it’s back for some birthday cake (which was a delicious chocolate heaven-ness, left by the hotel in our room) and a bath whilst watching TV in the bath, before kicking off with yet more cocktails in the Smoke House (J had a slight altercation with the Hotel), long story which he didn’t want to bother me about and the Hotel has kindly agreed to clear our bar tab for this evening! That could be dangerous, but equally as we’re both a couple of lightweights it could be a cheap round. I fancied some birthday fizz… so in the end we managed to wrack up a fairly hefty bar tab which resulted in us missing our taxi to dinner (some mix up about masks or something), by then it was all a bit of a blur. We end up in one of the hotel restaurants and shortly after that it’s even more hazy….
Tuesday 14th March
A slow start but head is perfectly fine, amazingly. After breakfast, go for a swim in the hotel pool testing out my new footwear, then once I’ve dried off, a bit of yoga in the gym (again no one else in there so I have it all to myself). We head out mid afternoon to the Petronas Towers where we’ve booked a trip up to the sky bridge and beyond. We end up on the 86th floor, everything looks very small on the ground from up there. Dash back to our favourite bar for a final cocktail to celebrate the end of the trip (any excuse!) and we’re told that once again the drinks are on the hotel. Head up to finish off packing and we’re up at 5.30 to get to the airport.
Wednesday 15th March
Alarm goes at an ungodly hour and once again we’re off to the airport, and just like that our trip is over and we’re heading home to Devon. It’s been an amazing trip with the best ever travelling companion, just a shame we couldn’t bring Meg along.
