( Overview
/ Chile and more
Ushuaia is known as the end of the world, I can see why. It is known to be the Southern most city in the world. If you are going to the Antarctic, this is you place to come to pick up a boat. We weren’t (this time) so had time enough to investigate more thoroughly. The first thing to point out about this place, is the weather. It can turn from blistering hot weather, to heavy rain to stinging wind, hail and snow within minutes. Be prepare to layer up!!
Ushuaia as a town, came about when Argentina decided to site their prison down here within the Tierra del Fuego and needed it serviced by prison officers etc. whatever their crime or length of sentence (whether volume or substantive) the prisoners would be treated exactly the same. Their biggest punishment was NOT being allowed to work outside in the cold but remain locked up in their cells.
The city is a sliver of steep streets and jumbled buildings below the snowcapped Martial Range. Here the Andes meets the famed Beagle Channel in a sharp skid, making way for the city before reaching a sea of lapping currents. It’s the southern most city in the world (or is it? As Chile say they have the southern most but theirs is TINY!)
We took a train (whilst in gorgeous sunshine) into the Tierra Del Fuego National Park, during the trip, I lost count of the amount of times the weather changed. The area is beautiful and I can see why people spend time down here trekking and why it’s such a centre for outdoor pursuits.
We found the southern most post office and got our passports stamped with a most impressive full page penguin stamp- coolio.
Ignoring the energetic outdoor pursuits stuff ( or prompts to do it) we found that Ushuaia also does exceedingly good chocolate- truly a great place! The weather turned quite suddenly towards the end of our trip, so we legged as best we could back to the boat. Another great place to come to and worthy of a longer stay.
