/ Sri Lanka 2024 - finally here!

Sri Lanka, 01. March 2024
Friday 1st to Monday 4th March

Another lovely breakfast watching the giant Kingfisher taking a dip in the pool and then we pack up to head North following the coast for Bentota. We pass through Ambalangoda and Kosgoda (where the turtle sanctuaries are) and finally we arrive at The Villa, in Bentota for our last three nights in Sri Lanka.

Friday 1st to Monday 4th

After checking in, we enjoy our private pool which comes with our suite that James has booked. We walk into Bentota for a look around and come back v hot but we have our lovely private pool to dip into. In the evening we take a tuktuk to a recommended restaurant, Mialles (?). It’s ok not amazing but I had some nice fish, didn’t fancy curries tonight.

Saturday 2nd

We’re told by a tuktuk driver last night that there’s a market in Bentota on a Saturday morning so he drives us into town after we’ve had a very lovely breakfast. Of course there’s no market! just the usual array of shops that he wanted to lure us too. We’re both a bit peeved. We walk around a few of the shops and I find a locals shop and buy some roasted curry powder and roasted chilli powder for about a £1. Another tourist shop wanted about £12 for the same thing! We then bump into a local and make the mistake of asking him about the local hooch called Toddy, he then takes us on a massive walk to someone’s house but when we get there J refuses to go in. For some reason neither of us felt safe, by this time J is very disgruntled so we catch another tuktuk back to our hotel. We then spend some time relaxing and reading by the pool. Watch the trains roar past (the train line runs at the bottom of the garden but just before the sea). We cross over the train tracks and head for a swim in the sea, taking a body board with us for a laugh and then dry out by the pool. Back to the room for some yoga whilst J heads off for a massage. We head out in the evening to die restaurants we spotted close to the railway tracks and end up eating in a restaurant called Trax. I had tuna with salad and J had crab Thermidor, his was decidedly average. We then wandered out and right next door was a little tailors so I’m having a kimono made for about 4,000 rps (about £10!), we pick it up tomorrow night.

Sunday 3rd

Our last full day, a quick check on the terrapins before breakfast. Then find a comfy spot by the pool more reading and relaxin. We then decide to walk up the beach in the opposite direction to before. The beach itself probably runs 6-8km with only a few resorts well back from the beach thanks to the train tracks creating a natural barrier. Late afternoon I unfurl my mat for some nice deep stretching and then head off for my massage, I have a male masseur and he’s fairly firm and pretty much sees all my bits and bobs! I swear I’ll have bruises! I lie there a bit stressed and self conscious but then I figure he’s probably seen worse so I just lay back and enjoy it 🫣. It was actually a very good massage. We eat in the hotel, fish and veggie curries which is really good and then we have to grab a tuktuk to take us to the tailors to collect my kimono that they’ve made for me, which is also fab. Back to pack our bags and get some sleep…

Monday 4th March

Awake around 6 so get up to shower and stroll before breakfast. We get into breakfast as soon as it opens and then our driver picks us up around 8 and we’re off the the Airport and homeward bound. We’ll definitely be back.
