Hillerød

Denmark, 20. April 2019
Hello everyone! We’ve been busy here in Denmark, so there is much to report. Try to keep up!

Yesterday afternoon, our travelers visited the Copenhagen Zoo to see a special Panda Bear exhibit. Xing Er and Mao Sun are two pandas visiting from Chengdu in China, and they’ve been drawing large crowds since their arrival earlier this year. It was great!

Then, we spent the rest of our night at Tivoli Gardens, one of Denmark’s oldest amusement parks. Students had a fantastic time enjoying rollercoasters and various rides. At night, the lights in Tivoli a delightful, otherworldly atmosphere. This was a perfect ending to the day.

This morning, we wasted no time getting started. After another excellent Danish breakfast at the Hotel Strand (we’re starting to get spoiled by this), we left the hotel around 8 AM and journeyed out of the city by train to Frederiksborg Castle in the town of Hillrød. While some students attended mass at a nearby chapel in town, others explored the grounds of the castle. After mass, all of the students assembled for a tour of the castle’s interior. This was an incredible experience that offered students the opportunity to dig more deeply into the history of the Danish monarchy. The castle was breathtaking.

After a quick lunch in Hillrød, we took another train and ventured to the town of Helsingør to visit Kronborg Castle (the castle that served as the model for Elsinore in William Shakespeare’s Hamlet). This was another incredible experience, and the pictures simply cannot do the castle any justice- the beauty of Kronborg is overwhelming in person.

That’s it for now! We’re back at the hotel in Copenhagen getting ready to venture out for dinner. More updates to come!
