( Overview
/ Australia
We flew only for 30 minutes to the small island "Kangaroo Island". We arrived at our hotel at noon. Our hotel was the Mercure Kangaroo Island Lodge. It is a very nice hotel, which is located directly on the sea. We chilled at the hotel for the rest of the day.
Today we saw a kangaroo in the wild for the first time. And not only that, first of all we got to know the Wildness-guide. He is also a nice guy, but not the guy you would expect for a guide. but he was on the island since 12 years which is 155 km long from east to west and
only 50 km long from north to south. Good information, I think, but the funny thing is that he is
talking about the mainland. Australia is actually nothing more than an island. Just a bit bigger. To be
more precise, it is the largest island in the world, which is not only its own country, but also an
independent continent.
Fun Fact: 80% of all animal and plant species exist only on this continent and cannot be found
anywhere else in the world, such as kangaroos, opossums, or koalas.
Very close to the airport is the small "Clifford's Honey Farm".
The honey here is something very special, because on Kangaroo Island there were never bees, until a
few Italian immigrants had the idea to take their bee colonies with them on the sailboat and to breed
them on Kangaroo Island. And so, since 1851, there has been Ligurian honey on an Australian island
and it is processed into all kinds of products. First and foremost, of course, the almost 15 different
types of honey in tubes, jars or buckets, the legendary honey ice cream for which most of the visitors
come, cosmetics and candles made of beeswax and various dressings and sauces based on honey.
First stop is Seal Bay. Here the sea lions lie lazily on the beach and recover from fishing, rank fights
and other strains of a sea lion life. With a tour guide you are allowed to get really close to the beach.
Of course, caution is still advised, as a sea lion can also move at quite a pace on land. Despite its
bulky body and imposing 350 kg live weight.
At the roadside and in the bush, Gavin shows me again and again edible plants and I am amazed at
the first taste test of salt bush leaves and the Australian beach rosemary. The bush leaves are so tasty
and tender that I take them of course for cooking. The beach rosemary remains because it is just so
intense and too dominant for cooking
