El Nido (Bacuit)

Philippines, 04. March 2023
Friday 3rd March (continued)

Back on dry land we take a jeepney from the Port to the centre of El Nido, we then get a tri-bike to our hotel which is outside of El Nido to the South (in between Corong Corong and Vanilla Beaches). We’ve rented an Airbnb apartment on the beach which is brand new and needless to say they have a few teething problems, we end up switching to a slightly bigger room and it has the most incredible view over the bay. I go in search of a laundry and find one just up the street so dump most of our clothing in for washing. We then end up on our balcony with a sundowner watching the sun set, we then head out for a fairly unmemorable bite to eat. Despite being really tired for some reason I decide to have a pedicure and promptly fall asleep in the chair whilst I’m having it! Fortunately it was virtually next door to where we are staying so I could stagger back with newly painted toes.

Saturday 4th March

A bit of a slow start, although we’re both awake early it’s quite noisy (local dogs barking etc). We head out for some breakfast and have the most incredible breakfast at a place called Blue Mango, the best we’ve had yet. We then motor down to Vanilla Beach, park the scooter that we’ve hired and go for a long walk down the beach from Vanilla Beach to Las Cabanas Beach. We see the zip wire overhead and toy with the idea of doing it. J thinks we should do it early tomorrow morning instead. We opt instead for a fresh coconut on the beach and take in the views. It’s truly beautiful here….We scooter back into town and there’s a live basket ball game plus a street market going on so we catch a bit of basket ball and then find a stall which we like the look of, we settle on fresh grilled squid with salad (it’s seemingly the healthiest option). Scooter back and get to bed at a reasonable time as I’ve signed up for some more diving tomorrow.

Sunday 5th March

I signed up to dive all day again leaving J at the hotel, although he very kindly got up early with me, took me to the dive shop at 7am but we had breakfast looking out to sea from the dive shop so that was handy, Diving was ok, although visibility not great and I was very cold at 26 degrees (sorry to say but I like my diving at 27/28 degrees ideally 😀). Didn’t see anything big apart from a large female hornbill, shoals of other large fish, Jack’s and Tuna I think, and a very large pufferfish plus a huge potato cod (grooper), lots of other small stuff like nudibranchs in an array of colours, more clown fish and anemones than you could shake a stick at and corals and other stuff that I’ve not seen before. So all in all a lovely few dives. Although I’ve noticed that I’m still experiencing vertigo when I’m underwater which is a bit disconcerting. After the diving, we headed back into Port around 3pm and then swam back to shore (they brought our dry bags off in a dinghy). Headed back to our Airbnb in a taxi to find J relaxing. We then watched the sunset together and popped out locally for a quick bite to eat at Chica Chica. I caught sight of myself in a mirror (haven’t seen myself since we left Coron Town five days ago, neither the boat nor our Airbnb seem to have heard of mirrors!), I look very frazzled, definitely caught the sun on the boat today.

Monday 6th March

Pop round to Blue Mango for a delicious breakfast (my favourite so far) and then scooter into town to find the post office so we can finally send some cards. We then head down to Vanilla Beach as J has decided he’d like to do the zip wire which takes you from the main land to another island that’s connected by a causeway (you can cross at low tide). I find a spot in the shade to watch him from (my stomach and vertigo just aren’t up to doing the zip wire right now). He enjoys the experience whilst I spend a few hours reading in the shade and then we head back to our place. Later we drive back into El Nido town centre to check out some recommended bars and restaurants and to soak up the vibe, we both quite like El Nido.

Tuesday 7th March

As we’re starting to run out of time sadly it’s time to leave El Nido for our next destination, we have booked a bus transfer today so we’ll be leaving here at lunchtime, it’s been a nice few days and I can see why it’s so popular. It’s certainly the nicest seaside town that we’ve stopped off at. Port Barton here we come….
