Helston

United Kingdom, 13. July 2023
It’s well known in the family that I’ve never been keen to come to Cornwall; in my experience it’s a long drive on crowded roads and then it rains. On our last holiday in Helston when Oliver was a baby, it poured and poured.
True to form it rained and rained all morning.
After watching the mens’ semi-finals at Wimbledon, it stopped raining so we decided to go ashore using the water taxi.
George struggling to control the ferry as he came alongside.
As we approached the pontoon, the wind abated. Helford quay looked calm and pretty.
The Helford River is a ria, a long, narrow inlet formed by the partial submergence of a river valley.
Taking advantage of the drier conditions we walked around the creek to Helford village.
“There were a few cottages in Helford hamlet, but they made no impression upon the river life itself, which belonged to the birds - curlew and redshank, guillemot and puffin.” From Daphne Du Maurier’s ‘Frenchman’s Creek’.
The weather hasn’t put children off crabbing.
5 miles southwest of Falmouth, Helford village was rated as among the "20 most beautiful villages in the UK and Ireland" by Condé Nast Traveler in 2020.[
The weather was even nice enough to sit outside for a drink.
The Sailing Club is in a fantastic location and has great facilities - including the best showers I’ve used on our travels; spotlessly clean, hot and powerful, hairdryers, and a big changing area all to myself. We also enjoyed a tasty supper in a buzzy bar.
An update on N-004. He’s growing fast and has just begun fish school. Hopefully he’ll begin eating on his own soon. He has a very sweet demeanour and is very curious.
