St Austell

United Kingdom, 17. July 2023
A beautiful morning as we left the Helford River…
…passing Helford Passage…
….looking back on Helford…
…viewing Trebah’s beach…
…and Durgan Cove.
Ponsense Cove, a good anchorage in calm conditions.
Rosemullion Head.
Rounding Rosemullion Head…
…into Falmouth Bay.
MS Stena Europe was launched in 1980, and since 2002 has been on the Fishguard-Rosslare route. In February 2023, however, a fire was reported in the engine room whilst en-route. Tugs brought the vessel into Rosslare, by which time the crew had extinguished the fire.
MS Stena Nordica has now replaced Stena Europe in the Irish Sea. The internet suggests she is undergoing maintenance at Cammell-Laird, Birkenhead, but she’s now at anchor here.
St Anthony Head and Shag Rock. The lighthouse was constructed in 1835, and is 62 feet tall. In 1983 it featured in the intro of ‘Jim Henson’s Fraggle Rock’ as the Fraggle Rock Lighthouse.
Many of the little fishing boats have mizen sails to keep them to wind.
On the horizon we could see a large box-like structure, but with no AIS. From the news we discovered it is the Bibby Stockholm, which has had a refit in Falmouth, and is being towed by tugs to Portland Port, Weymouth.
The large accommodation barge will controversially house hundreds of single male asylum seekers. The first time migrants have been housed in a berthed vessel in the UK, it has 222 en-suite rooms and is contracted to be berthed at Portland for 18 months.
Goose-winging across Falmouth Bay.
Seeing rain on the horizon.
Scanning for lobster pots.
Mevagissey.
Charlestown.
St Austell.
Gribbin Head which is owned by the National Trust.
The ferry leaving for Mevagissey.
The 84 feet high square beacon Gribbin Tower was erected by Trinity House in 1832.
Entering Fowey Harbour we were aware how much more marine traffic there is here, both commercial and leisure, small and large craft.
