Southwold

United Kingdom, 11. July 2024
Walberswick side of the River Blyth, near the ferry; the name is derived from 2 Saxon words - Waldbert, the name of a Saxon and wyc meaning harbour. Before the floods of 1953 there were many fishing shacks on stilts along the bank. Now Walberswick relies on tourism and is famous for crabbing.
The recommended way to enter Southwold Harbour is to come in with the flood, and then turn into the tide, which means more control, and the possibility of ferry-gliding to a berth.
Passing Harbour Marine Services we saw the lads waiting to take our lines.
Lovely to have a berth waiting for us, and an emotional moment being welcomed by Mike on the pontoon. We also met Darren, the new yard manager.
Having just tidied our lines, we had another welcome from David, Di, Tom, Jo and Tilly who were visiting for the day to do some crabbing. Lovely to take time out for coffee.
A morning of sorting and cleaning Avalon, and then time for a walk along Blackshore Quay…
….and a pint of Blackshore in the Harbour Inn.
Our evening was spent in Le Roc enjoying a fish platter and glass of wine to celebrate our return.
Back on board to watch more tennis from Wimbledon.
Lovely to see another Felixstowe Clayton Skiff like ours at Titchmarsh.
