Malaysia, 20. February 2025
Thursday 20th February

Left Malacca early and as luck would have it a lovely Malaysian couple who were at our hotel gave us a lift to the bus station. Caught the 10.30 bus to KL which arrived around 12.45, then eventually found a Grab (after much hassle from the local taxi drivers who get right up into your face, the most hassle we’ve experienced on the whole trip). We reach our hotel around 1.15pm, dump bags, pop out locally and find A Grain cafe and grab a salad (I’m concerned I won’t be able to eat again for a few days as have a dental appointment at 3pm). Jump into another Grab and arrive at the dentists (Mr Yap!) just before 3pm. Long story short, I wanted a second opinion about a couple of teeth that I’d been told need to be removed, I had a thorough examination with Mr Yap plus a 360 degree X-ray of my head (it looks pretty scary I have to say). Anyway, the conclusion was that the teeth are fine and I don’t need them extracting. We then catch a Grab back to Petaling St (famous market streets) to wander around and arrive just as a whole tonne of Police have arrived to do a bust on all the counterfeit traders, it was quite a sight to behold. We then walk from there to our favourite hotel (Hotel Majestic) and go straight to the Smoke Room (our favourite bar) for a cocktail, very lovely, something we always do when in KL! I think we then caught a Grab back to the hotel, change and head straight to Malathai for dinner (Pad Broccoli for me and Beef Massaman for J) although it’s all a bit hazy!

Friday 21st February

Our last penultimate day in KL and of our trip sadly. Weather is nice so we spend a bit of time by the pool on 25th floor, I’ve been listening to a number of podcasts (Elizabeth Day and also Desert Island Disc back catalogue). I do a nice yoga session in the gym and then get ready to head out to walk to an area which is good for bars and restaurants (J had a recommendation from the hotel receptionist). However we arrive and I instantly have a sense of humour failure, it’s hot, crowded, busy and really noisy so I decide that I really don’t want to be there… we head to a quieter area and find a restaurant which we’d eaten at in Malacca called Gravy Baby which was ok, quieter (although MTV or the Malaysian equivalent was blaring out on multiple TV screens).

Saturday 22nd February

Our last day, a bit more pool time and then we head out on a self guided walking tour of all the old Malay townhouses (c/o Lonely Planet guide). Some of them are being lovingly cared for whilst others are in complete disrepair. We then head back to our hotel, pack up and just have time for a few games of Jaipur, I’m pleased to say I will the last round. We’ve read about a Malay fusion restaurant called Manja so we’re walking there. Really great meal to finish on… (Steamed Grouper with eggplant three ways for me!).

Sunday 23rd February

Up at 5.30, taxi to the airport at 6am and finally in the lounge by 7.30 for breakfast. Who would have thought that I’d already be craving Nasi Lemaj for breakfast! Flight at 9.30 to LHR and then that’s it until the next time…
