Visited the Hoa Lo prison today in Hanoi. This was a prison set up by the French to imprison Vietnamese political prisoners from the communist party. They were tortured and subjected to horrible conditions due to overcrowding. The cells were tiny and some rooms still had the foot chains in them
The prison was later used by the Vietnamese after the Vietnam war to imprison US pilots however their lives were a lot different to the Vietnamese prisoners. They were allowed to play sports, eat full meals etc. it’s interesting bcos this contradicts what you read online about it…
A memorial for the Vietnamese political prisoners who even though chained up, their stances are supposed to represent strength and survival through the conditions they suffered in prison
The cafe is full of notes and you can even see them on the outside and on the trees. I had an iced chocolate drink here and wrote several notes and hung them up
Beer street - full of people trying to get you to come into their bar / restaurant, very hectic down here
