Thursday 29th June
Thursday's a bust. It rains and rains and rains.
I take it slow in the morning because I think I've given Berlin a real good go and I'm wondering what to do before Mandy is finished for the day and we need to head tot he airport. I've also got the whole checkout thing to consider.
After a slow shower etc etc I look outside and the rain is heavy and constant. 1/2 an hour later the same so I decide it is an ideal time to watch the Hurricanes vs British & Irish Lions rugby match.
By the time the game is finished the weather situation is the same and I'm being asked to check out.
Mandy leaves her conference slightly early and encourages a walk up to Potsdamer Platz for a window shop and something to eat. Umbrellas out and thankfully a little respite from the rain. However returning is another story and we get back to the hotel soaked from mid thigh down.
We change into dry clothes and look to get a taxi to the airport. The concierge recommends we train, as the weather is causing chaos on the roads and the 20-30 min trip is taking over 1 1/2 hrs. So we change back to our wet clothes, hike to the nearby U-bahn and train out to near the airport. At the stop before the airport we must swap to a bus and as we reach the street there are at least 50 people in the same predicament. But we do get on the 2nd, or was it 3rd, bus after about 20 minutes and get to the airport to change into dry clothes once again then pretty much board our plane immediately. It was close but thankfully BA is flying (Air Berlin wasn't doing so well) and we get to Heathrow without mishap (BA0995 Departing Tegel (Berlin) at 20:55 (Berlin time) and arriving Heathrow (London) terminal 5 at 21:50 (London time). It's not as smooth as we would like at Heathrow getting to our hotel, I think it's particularly annoying because of the day we have had and the lateness of the hour. There is nothing worse than nightmare travel to a destination and then not getting the last part smoothly either.
