San Pedro de Atacama

Chile, 16. December 2014
Streets of San Pedro
San Pedro is an oasis situated in the middle of the Atacama desert close to one of the biggest salt flats in the world and surrounded by a couple of volcanoes still active today. No wonder the small town with a nice old white church, a lot of adobe houses, many good restaurants and travel agencies attracts an ever rising number of visitors. As it is located on 2450m above sea level temperatures don't rise above 25 degrees (though it still gets very hot in the sun - so be careful). At night it is getting cold with temperatures dropping below 9 degrees. Around San Pedro there a lot of things to do. So it's not getting boring even if you stay for a longer time. To be honest 4 day is the minimum ;) The landscape is amazing, unique and unforgettable. The volcanos of the Andes next to the town - some of them over 5900m high - give the landscape the last perfect touch. We really had a good time here!

Lackuntur Hostel

Very nice & affordable hostel with Nancy as a welcoming, warm and helpful host. The swimming pool is very much appreciated after a hot & dusty day in the Atacama desert, trust us! Plus: standing on the terrace, you get amazing views of the volcano!

Flamingo Tours

The are a lot of things to see and do around San Pedro. Unfortunately most of them are out of reach if you don't have a car. So there seem to be billions of tour operators - all offering the same trips at the same time. If you are looking for small groups, very friendly guides and drivers Flamingo Tours is your choice! With a small twist to the routes they make sure that you get to visit the spots without the crowds.

Valle de la Luna

The name is not exaggerated. The valley really looks like the moon itself and it's beautiful. If you are up to some excercise: it's reachable by bike from San Pedro. Make sure to see the sunset on the dune - and check with the rental company that your bike has lights for a safe trip back!

Laguna Chaxa

Magical place with beautiful colours, mirror-like waters and beautiful flamingos in the middle of the Atacama salt flats.

Ñ

Laguna Miñiques & Miscanti

Surrounded by high volcanos these two lagoons with their deep blue water are located on the altiplanico (highlands). You should come early in the morning while the water is silent and mirror-like due to the absence of wind, viquñas are drinking on the shores and visitors are only few. And don't forget to bring warm clothes :)

Laguna Cejar

Laguna Cejar contains of a couple of small lakes within the Atacama salt flats. In two of them you can swim ... well kind of. The lake is so salty that you are floating on the surface! Great fun!

Roots Café & Pizza

Delicious, real coffee (no Nescafé), homemade musli and huge sandwiches full of flavour - also a good option for veggie-lovers.
