Argentina - El Chaltén - Front or back? :) 2
Front or back? :)
We arrived in El Chaltén after following a long road through a flat and dry plain.
On the horizon we got to see the snow white Fitz Roy massive rising over the plain pretty early.

The wind was blowing strongly (approx. 50 km/h) in our direction, the sun was shining and we had big smiles on our faces - what a picturesque and amazingly beautiful scenery!
It's said to be rare to have the peak of Fitz Roy visible and clear of clouds; so we felt blessed and happy (especially after 2 cold & rainy days camping in Torres del Paine).

El Chaltén was only founded in the 1980's by Argentina - just in case to prevent Chile from annexing this area (no idea though if Chile ever really intented that or if it was the only reason for the founding).
Things are still a bit basic and the town is continuosly developing (so book your room way ahead during high season or bring a tent), but all you need is available: real coffee, a good pice of cake and WiFi.

Around Fitz Roy there are a lot of nice hiking trails, which lead through a beautiful nature and some of them bring you very close to the high peaks and glaciars. It's also possible to cross the boarder to Chile, but that has to be done on foot - and you have to make sure to have your papers in order.
There it is ... the old Fitz

A lot of people get here as a hitchhiker and cross the border to Chile by feet.
