/ Two Scilly Bullocks on a Boat
The swell in St Mary’s Pool made for an unpleasant night’s sleep, and the forecast indicated it would worsen, so we headed for Green Bay anchorage on Bryher.
Avoiding the rocks, charted and uncharted we found a spot close to shore in 2 metres of water (which would mean we’d dry out at low tide).
It seemed a little weedy, but nothing was on the charts. Kevin was just beginning to have his doubts, and do some depth sounding with the boat hook to check the sea floor, when Liam and Aidan, guys who have live aboard boats here, approached in their rib to say we were probably over rocky rubble.
When the tide went out, we could see they were right! Liam very kindly showed us an exact spot where we would settle on level ground.
Originally constructed in just 4 days for one of the ‘Challenge Anneka [Rice]’ TV programmes, Anneka’s quay provided 18 years of service before it was decided to replace the original timber decking with lower maintenance concrete deck. It was also slightly lengthened to provide deeper water access.
Standing on a rocky promontory guarding the anchorage between Bryher and Tresco, this round tower was built after the conquest of the Royalist Scillies in 1651. It is one of the few surviving Cromwellian fortifications in Britain.
Bryher is lovely. Sandy paths and tracks wend there way between lovely hedges and carefully tended gardens to the campsite and The Town. By the side of the road, little stalls with honesty tins (and some card readers) sell produce and locally made craft.
