United Kingdom, River Deben

United Kingdom, 13. June 2024
A glorious morning for our 5am start.
Our crew ready for the off.
Leaving Woodbridge marina, going over the bar, just after high tide.
Storing the fenders.
Tide Mill Woodbridge.
Waldringfield with the Maybush Inn.
A leisurely potter up the River Deben with Richard at the helm.
Felixstowe Ferry.
Leaving the entrance to the Deben, the shoals looked very close.
Time for a sail.
We had a great close haul sail, tacking up the coast. As the wind increased, and with very little progress towards home, we decided to motor sail as we approached the main channel coming from Harwich.
The Stena ferry passed ahead much earlier than we reached the channel, but we had to stand to for Arklow Falcon, an 89.95 metre general cargo ship sailing under the flag of Ireland.
Not being able to go into our berth until high tide, we anchored for some lunch.
Oakley Creek, with seals snoozing on the banks….
….so we had a snooze too. The wind came up over the afternoon, worrying us about returning to Walton Yacht Basin, commonly called The Pond.
Woodbridge Marina to Walton Yacht Basin.
Having been battered by high winds in Hamford Water and as we came around Stone Point into the Walton Channel, it was a relief to discover the Yacht Basin was sheltered. Good to be back, we met Kate, Mark and Maggie for supper in the Yacht Club.
