A lovely start to the day for a motor sail up the River Crouch. Some good wind, but against the tide.
Everything looks better in the sunshine.
The 14th century St Nicholas Church in Canewdon is on one of the highest hills of the coastline. Steeped in a history of witchcraft and ‘devilry’, folklore states whilst the steeple stands 6 witches live in the village, and if you run anti-clockwise around the church on Halloween, the devil appears.
Bridgemarsh Marina.
Burnham on Crouch marina built in 1989.
Burnham looking quaint in the morning sunshine.

The reason for motoring against the tide - crossing Buxey Sand from the Whitaker Channel to the Ray Sand Channel should be done near high tide. It isn’t buoyed as buoys tend to shift their positions. Local knowledge, however, says to cross on 001.00.000E. Counted down to crossing!
Crossing, we had more depth than expected. On the charts, it looks like land.
We then had a fantastic close haul sail in the Ray Sand Channel….
….although needed to reef the mainsail as the wind increased.
