We refuelled and then spoke to the owner of Orca II before we left; Peter has asked the yard for a quote to repair the marks we left - trust us to damage the poshest boat in the marina!
Looking very small next to the MSC container ship, the Harwich Harbour Foot and Bicycle Ferry has been connecting Harwich, Shotley and Felixstowe since 1912.
Built in the 18th century, Languard Fort was manned through both World Wars, and played an anti-aircraft role during WWII. In 1951 two of the gun casemates were converted into Cold War control rooms; it was closed in 1956.
We were joined by another yacht and Deepsea Essex Smack Pioneer as we sailed north. Built in 1864 by Peter Harris at Rowhedge, and restored between 1998 and 2005, Pioneer sails out of Brightlingsea. She now offers young people the challenge of sailing and training.
Standing up to 12 metres high and with walls up to 4 metres thick, Martello towers were built to repel the possible invasion by Napoleon’s armies. Originally 103 towers were built between 1805 and 1812 along the south-east coast of England, each equipped with a cannon on the roof.
