Ramsholt Arms. River Deben

United Kingdom, 10. July 2024
It was lovely to wake up to sunshine, but a very windy day; pleased we decided to have a day at anchor and go for a walk.
Thinking we could walk to the pub via a less straightforward route we set off, only to discover what was shown as a path on our OS app is not a public right of way.
Backtracking we spied Avalon through the trees.
Swans and Geese, as well as other marsh birds enjoy this terrain.
This part of the Deben is a roosting and nesting area for Egret and Heron.
Noisily warning us not to approach any closer we passed an Oyster Catcher.
This stretch of river was a busy port in 1346 when Edward III assembled his fleet to invade France. It was still used for trade well into the 1900s.
The churchyard was used when making the 1999 film, ‘Great Expectations’.
Sitting on a hill overlooking the river, Ramsholt All Saints is one of only 38 round tower churches in Suffolk, and 181 in England. Used as a watchtower by the Saxons against Viking invaders, by 1287 it was a charted seamark. Much of the Norman church remains, but the windows are medieval.
A sole-less Kevin.
A Heron fishing as the tide receded.
The only native species of goose to breed in England, Greylag Geese are descendants of domestic goose, first domesticated in the 1300s.
Whenever we visit here, we remember the very helpful George Collins who died in 2023 at the age of 93, having only recently retired from his role as Harbour Master. By the time the sun was setting, the wind had also decreased, so a calm evening and night.
This boat reminds us of the Scillonian; hopefully a more comfortable journey on the Deben.
Very pleased to have power and reception, Kevin enjoyed England’s victory over the Netherlands.
Having enjoyed lunch on the patio, we returned to pick up a mooring buoy for the night just opposite - not easy in strong wind and tide. A former shooting lodge called Ferry House, The Ramsholt (pronounced Rams Holt) Arms opened in 1908 when the licence was transferred from the nearby Dock Inn.
