Siem Reap

Cambodia, 21. May 2025
An early rise at 4am this morning for the Angkor Wat tour. I didn’t know much about this world wonder but our tour guide was so good and now I’m well informed! The temple dates back to 1150 as a Hindu temple and was later converted to a Buddhist temple.
The temple was abandoned for many years, it is thought due to ecological factors or possible war but was rediscovered in the 16th century in the jungle. A whole new city was discovered with over 100 temples coming to life.
The wonder of these temples is how were they built in 1150 without the resources we now have today. How did they manage to get the stones to the top of the building without a crane / lifts. It is thought that elephants were used to carry the weight of the stone.
It is estimated that 300,000 people and 6,000 elephants were used to build the temples across 30 years. There are cravings and sacred drawings throughout each temples. Some of them even represent dinosaurs which is a wonder bcos how could they picture dinosaurs? Were they common back then?

Another wonder of Angkor Wat is how they found the exact 0 point north of the temple without using a compass. This spot marks the exact middle of the north, south, east and west. It is believed that they figured this out by using astrology and the stars.

This is the temple where tomb raider was filmed
Dinosaur carvings in the walls
Angkor wat was believed to be a Hindu temple when it was built and later converted to a Buddhist temple. It is believed that the Buddhas in the temples have no heads as they have been looted and sold for money. These could also have been destroyed during the unrest in Cambodia
The final pyramid temple with faces carved in the walls. It doesn’t look real!
Arrived back to the hostel around 1pm and went straight for a nap. Woke up and went to New York bagel and had a cream cheese bagel and a homemade red velvet cake. So needed and so delicious
Went to the hostel’s social hour for new arrivals and we made a cocktail each. Met a whole new group of people and had some really good conversations with the hostel rep, Am, and a Japanese girl called Reane. I also bumped into the Swedish girl I met in Phnom Pehn again. Also some of the Koh Sdach
