Woodbridge

United Kingdom, 11. June 2024
A bright start to the day.
Mistley Quay in the distance. Since 2008 an ugly high fence has meant it’s not possible to berth alongside the quay,or fish or crab from it. A local group are still campaigning to Free the Quay.
Raising the anchor.
South cardinal marking the entrance to Holbrook Bay; a handy spot for cormorants to rest.
A steady wind on our beam meant a pleasant sail.
Harwich High Lighthouse is one of a pair of lighthouses built in the early 19th century as leading lights to guide vessels into the harbour. Though no longer functioning as a lighthouse, it houses a museum.
St Nicholas’ Church, consecrated in 1822, was built to seat 1,500 is the largest in the district.
An empty Vuoksi Maersk arriving in Felixstowe. The six year old container ship sails under the flag of Denmark. In 2021 Maersk settled a major lawsuit with Evergreen out of court. Their ship, Ever Given grounded and blocked the Suez Canal.
Felixstowe Docks. Of course, the fine weather didn’t continue; squally showers and variable winds all day.
Felixstowe.
Safe Water buoy at the mouth of the Deben River.
The entrance to the Deben looks scary with water breaking over the sand banks…
…but buoyage is very good, and easy to follow.
Passing Felixstowe Ferry, you’re immediately in peaceful Suffolk countryside.
We’re sorry not to be anchoring at the Rocks this time, one of our favourite anchorages.
We’ve often dried out and grounded at the Rocks, but fortunately not met the end of the wreck on the beach.
Putting out fenders.
Approaching the Tide Mill in Woodbridge.
A moody evening. Supper on board, and a Zoom meeting with Aynsome Manor Park, with better 4G than at home!
The sill at Tidemill Yacht Harbour. No problems entering, but issues with power; the power supply is on land, but the pontoons float, so you need a long lead at low tide, and a high risk of unplugging (us) as the tide recedes!
